General Information
Every member of the Physics Department has a web page if he/she
appears in our database (see below). However, many members will want
to build their own pages as well. If you are looking for more
information on how to do this, you're on the right page. Read on!

Auto-generated Web Pages for Department Members
Physics Department faculty, staff, researchers and graduate
students each have a web page which is automatically generated in a
standard format by clicking on a member's name in the People listing. If any Queen's Physics
member also has a personal web page, the URL and a link to this page
should appear on the member's auto-generated page. In an effort to
avoid duplication, detailed course/teaching information will not be
provided on these auto-generated pages directly.
The information contained on these pages is maintained in a database,
and this information should be kept up to date: it is the
responsibility of each Physics Department member to verify his/her
personal information and to notify the designated Physics web
maintainer of any changes. Members who do not wish to have their
personal information (e.g. email address, office or phone number)
included on the web pages should inform the web maintainer
immediately.

Options For Generating Your Own Pages
There are several options available to Physics Department members who
wish to produce their own web pages, and these are outlined below.
Each Department member (faculty, staff, researchers and graduate students)
shall be provided access to a Physics web
server and a directory into which they can place HTML files and related
resources. Once the web site is complete, the Department member
should inform the Physics web maintainer of the complete URL for the
page, so that a link can be provided from the member's auto-generated
Physics page.
- In a hurry? Don't know HTML?
Anyone with
little time and/or HTML knowledge can create a basic web page
using this simple standard template
form. You simply type what you want in the boxes of a
form (no HTML knowledge required) and save the resulting file.
You can edit the output file yourself later, if you want to.
- In a hurry? Know some basic HTML already?
(Recommended option)
Save and edit one of our sample pages which fit in with the
Physics "look": Physics web templates and
resources. These provide good starting points for
developing your own Physics web page.
- Want to learn some (more) HTML?
We encourage
the production of web pages using HTML (HyperText Markup
Language) that is compliant with the World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C) standards and guidelines. It's not as hard as it might
sound! Check out our Beginner's
Guide if you are just getting started. You can also
look at the various tutorials and manuals at
W3C for more info.
- Learning by example
If you learn best by
example, check out a relatively simple (yet somewhat cheesy) generic sample
webpage with all the basics. When this page is
displayed, click on your browser background and select View
Page Source to view the underlying HTML.
- Commercial webpage design software
If you
prefer to generate your own web pages using any number of the
commercially-available packages (e.g. MSWord, Netscape
Composer, FrontPage), go ahead.
Be sure to check that the resulting page:
- is legible using different web browsers, and
- isn't too big (5 kbytes per second is a typical download rate
for a 56K modem connection).
We strongly recommend the use of HTML Tidy on pages
generated in this manner, to ensure that they are compliant
with official HTML standard (too often, they are not). Good luck
and have fun.
- Physics Banners and Images
If you are
designing your own pages, you may wish to add some of our banners and
images to your Queen's Physics page.
Members of the Department should contact the Physics web maintainer or
computer systems technologist if further information is required.
