Exploring Canadian Astronomy Research Collaborations

Abstract

The Canadian astronomical community has achieved a prominent position in worldwide research. The Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (HIA) has established world-class astronomy technology and instrumentation development teams in both the radio and optical/infrared regimes. Recent research and development activities have been driven by the Long Range Plan (LRP) for Canadian astronomy with a focus on future international observatories such as ALMA, SKA, TMT, and JWST. A key LRP goal is to foster astronomical instrumentation efforts at Canadian universities. While HIA is not a direct funding source for Canadian universities, there is a strong desire to explore astronomy research collaborations between HIA and universities to realize fully the LRP’s promise of exciting, forefront science. In this presentation, we describe some of the possibilities for such collaborations including: Sharing of research ideas and opportunities; Development of highly qualified people through student and postdoctoral activities and engagement; HIA early concept support in university research initiatives and proposals; Canadian research and instrumentation support in LRP international observatory instrumentation efforts; HIA consulting support in university based advanced research efforts.
