Moving forward in radiation therapy: 3D dose verification and probing cellular response

Abstract
 
The goal of radiation therapy treatment of cancer is to deliver a high, lethal dose of radiation to a localized target (e.g. tumour), while sparing surrounding healthy tissues. Recent advances in complex dose delivery strategies are helping to realize this goal of precision radiation therapy. However, current measurement techniques are incapable of providing the 3D dose measurements required to validate some of these complex dose deliveries. This talk will describe research efforts in the area of 3D radiation measurement through the use of radiosensitive polymer gel materials. We will review some of the basic science behind polymer gel dosimeters, the imaging of gel dosimeters for dose information extraction, and some of the work underway in our lab in the area of polymer gel dosimetry. Arguably, the future of radiation therapy will move beyond the precision of dose delivery and localization and into the precision of dose prescription. Of great current interest is advancing our understanding of biological response to radiation. This may, in the future, allow for patient specific radiation dose prescriptions and improved treatment outcomes. This talk will describe some of our current efforts in using spectroscopic techniques for furthering our understanding of the molecular-level response of biological material to ionizing radiation. This work is largely in the development phase.
