Searching for the Higgs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

Pierre Savard
University of Toronto

Time

Fri. October 28, 2011     1:30 PM     Stirling A

Abstract

All the particles of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics have been found except for the elusive Higgs boson. This particle plays an important role in the SM, as it gives mass to all fermions and the particles that carry the weak force. The Large Hadron Collider has now delivered enough collisions to the ATLAS and CMS experiments for them to explore most of the Higgs mass range favoured by theory and previous experimental constraints. I will give an overview the current Higgs boson search by the ATLAS experiment. I will also discuss the status of searches for new particles and forces beyond the Standard Model, focusing on searches for Supersymmetry and Dark Matter.

Refreshments will be available before the talk.
