Assessment of the Fukushima-Daichii Accident and Radiological Consequences

Abstract

The Fukushima-Daichii nuclear accident, triggered by the massive earthquake off the north-east coast of Japan and resultant tsunami, was the second worst accident in commercial nuclear power history. The presentation will present a nuclear safety assessment of the sequence of events; reactor core heat up and fuel damage processes; hydrogen generation and transport within the reactor buildings; characteristics of the hydrogen explosions and damage to buildings; fission product release and atmospheric dispersion characteristics; and the radiological consequences of the accident.
