Self-organised Wires and Antiwires on Semiconductor Surfaces

Abstract
 
The talk will start with a brief overview of the topic of surface physics. A scheme of making ab-inito calculations of surface atomic geometry and electronic states will ne nriefly presented. Results of the atomic geometry, electronic states and dispersion of the most tightly bound image state for the self-organised Si(111)-In(4x1)nanowire system will be discussed in some detail. Results will also be presented for theoretically simulated STM images for self-organised Bi-lines on the Si(001) surface, which suggest a low density of states close to the valence band maximum and localized on the Bi-lines, supporting the recently proposed model of a quantum antiwire system.
