Engineering the semiconductor nanocrystal
and photonic crystal for nanophotonic device

Semiconductor nanocrystals and photonic crystals have drawn great interests in the fields of nanochemistry and nanophysics in the last decade. The electrons and holes are fined in nanocrystal with zero degree of freedoms. The electronic and optical properties of nanocrystal are size-tunable due to quantum size effect. Photonic crystal is a structure with a periodic variation of refractive index and is a prospective basis for photonic functionality. Such crystal can be used to bend and steer the light of an appropriate frequency. In this presentation, the electron density of states in the nanocrystals and the photon density of states in the photonic crystals have been engineered separately within one and the same esoscopic structure because of the substantial difference between the electron and photon wavelengths. Linear and nonlinear optical properties have been characterized in the three-dimensional colloidal photonic crystals doped with nanocrystals. The optical functions in these nanophotonic devices will enable them to control the light propagation in three-dimensional periodic structures.
