Manganese oxides with perovskite structure display a wealth of electronic and magnetic phases, ranging from charge-ordered insulator, ferromagnetic metal, to paramagnetic insulator. In this talk, I will show how we imaged the various phases using local probes, such as magnetic force microscopy, x-ray microdiffraction, and scanning tunneling microscopy. In particular, I will show how the presence of the strong electron-lattice coupling plays a role in the magnetism of colossal magnetoresistive films on a mesoscopic length scale, resulting in a variation of the Curie temperature of the amount of 20 K over a micron length scale. In addition, I will show charge ordering on an atomic length scale. |
