Astro/Particle Seminar

Super-Strong Magnetic Fields in Astrophysics

Maxim Lyutikov
McGill

Time

Mon. March 3, 2003     11:30 AM     Room 201

Abstract

Astrophysical plasmas are often relativistic and strongly magnetized. A wide range of astrophysical objects like neutron stars (and especially a sub-class called magnetars on which this talk will concentrate), black holes, Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursts, may contain magnetic fields so strong that plasma dynamics is dominated by electro-magnetic fields (as oppose to hydrodynamics). Our experience from Solar corona physics and from thermonuclear research may cautiously be used as a guide in our understanding of the dynamical and emission properties as well as mechanisms leading to eruptive production of X-rays in these objects.
