| Abstract | |
|
I will review the physics and the technology behind the observation of
gravitational radiation using ground-based antennae (such as the LIGO
interferometers) and space-based detectors (such as LISA). I will then
discuss the radically new knowledge that gravitational wave observations
are expected to generate for various astronomical systems. I will focus on
the challenging data analysis tasks involved in the detection of the weak
signals emitted by these systems, and will illustrate my presentation with
results from the first LIGO Science Run. |

Refreshments will be available after the talk.
Dr. Sylvestre is a candidate for the Astrophysics position in the Physics department. |
